June Meeting
Minutes of the AGM
Gavin opened the meeting. Twenty members attended. Apologies
were received from Tony, Peter and David.
The previous years minutes were approved (proposer
Neil, Seconded Michael). There were no matters arising
The next item on the agenda was the combined committee
report, circulated with the last newsletter. Neil informed us that Albert
Bydes collection had not been sold as was expected. The report was accepted
((proposer Alastair, Seconded James). There were no points raised by the
membership and no points raised by the committee.
Neil reported that the accounts had been audited and
agreed.
There then followed the elections.
The committee was elected
unopposed, proposed by Michael and seconded by Ian. There were no nominations
from the floor.
Neil was retained as
auditor, proposed by Graham and seconded by Stuart.
Gavin continues as
President, proposed by John and seconded by Will.
Graham proposed a formal vote of thanks to the
committee and Henry proposed a vote of thanks to Michael for his work in the 60th
celebrations after which Gavin closed the AGM.
Annual Display Competition
There were four entries, once again a very good
showing.
The first display was from Jawaid, with a collection
of George III shillings showing most of the available busts. He hadnt brought
along the Bank of England 1787 types because of lack of space but had brought
along a date run of the Bull head versions.
Next we had John who explained that he came back to
collecting, after forming his first collection from change in 1966, when he was
in America. With time on his hands he went along to
his Wells Fargo bank and sorted through pennies (American cents) in $50 lots
trying to form a collection. This mirrored his first collection which began
with UK pennies from his pocket money. Having tediously gone through all this
he finally found a coin shop where you could buy the more recent years in a
penny board (Whitman folder) in sparkling condition for about $5.
The American penny series is quite interesting, with
the older large cents followed by the Flying Eagle type, the Indian heads,
the Lincoln/wheatsheaf types (including steel ones from the War years) the
Lincoln Memorial reverses and yet more types in the last few years. He also had
an example of a two-cent coin and a silver three cent coin.
Also about this time the Susan B. Anthony dollar was
issued and John related how he hunted for one in New York while sightseeing,
sadly with no luck until he went to get the train home and got some in change
from a machine in Grand Central Station!
Having returned to England he then began updating his
original 1966 collection and joined Reading Coin Club.
After that we had James with some Piedfort Sovereigns
from modern times. The particular coins James brought
along illustrated three obverses and three reverses all within two years of
each other. Namely the 2022 Piedfort sovereign, the 2022 Elizabeth II Memorial
Piedfort sovereign and the 2023 Charles III Piedfort sovereign. James was
particularly drawn to the Memorial reverse which is a stunning design. Other
years are available that have two obverses and reverses within a couple of
years (1836/87) but no one could come up with three.

Finally, we had Will with a run of UK proof sets from
1983 to 2009. He revealed that he hadnt needed to buy them all, because his
granny bought quite a few of them for him as a birthday present each year. He
pointed out that it was particularly appropriate to bring them along now, as it
was his birthday on the weekend. The collection nicely shows off the change in
our coinage with some coins disappearing (1/2p) and others changing size
(5/10p) and some of the commemorative pieces that were issued in that period.
Will stopped buying them in 2010 because the Mint no longer produced an
affordable set each year with all the circulating denominations and you needed
to buy several different sets to get one of each.

Following a vote by the members present, Jawaid came
top of the poll.
Thank you to all the members who made the effort to
put together a display and keep this important tradition going in the club.
Congratulations go
to Jawaid for a stunning quality collection! A well deserved
and popular win.
